Manchester United won a sweeping victory over Leeds United, (6-2) on Sunday evening, in the 14th round of the English Premier League.
United’s goals were scored by Scott McTomenay (2 and 3), Bruno Fernandes (30 and 70 penalties), Victor Lindelof (37) and Daniel James (66), while Leeds’ Liam Cooper (41) and Stuart Dallas (73) scored.
With this victory, United rose to third place on the table with 26 points on goal difference against Everton, knowing that it has a postponed match, while Leeds United’s balance stuck at 17 points in 14th place.
Manchester United coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer relied on the way of playing 4-2-3-1, as Victor Lindelof cooperated with Harry Maguire in the depth of defense, with the support of the two backs Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw.
Scott McTominay and Fred were stationed in the middle of the field, while the Portuguese Bruno Fernandes moved between the wings Daniel James and Marcus Rashford, and behind the outspoken striker Anthony Martial, who sometimes exchanged positions with Rashford.
In the next aspect, Leeds United coach Marcelo Bielsa resorted to the 4-1-4-1 method of play, where the defensive line was formed by Stuart Dallas, Luke Ayling, Liam Cooper and Ezgjan Alioski. Kalvin Phillips was positioned alone as a fulcrum in the middle of the field. Raphinha and Jack Harrison were the wings. Rodrigo Moreno and Matthews Clich moved behind the outspoken striker Patrick Bamford.
United did not give their visitors much time, they opened the scoring in the second minute, when Fernandes passed the ball to McTominay, who shot it from outside the penalty area, low to the left of goalkeeper Meslier.
McTominay surprised Leeds with a second goal just a minute later, when he received a ball from his colleague Martial, to put it in the net, out of the goalkeeper’s reach.
Raphinha almost scored a goal for Leeds in the 4th minute, but full-back Shaw dismissed his attempt while heading towards the goal, and Bamford failed to use a through ball to go away from the goal in the eighth minute.
McTominay passed the ball to Rashford, whose shot rebounded from the defense in the 10th minute, and the referee canceled a goal for the away team in the 19th minute, citing the offside of its owner Bamford.
Manchester United managed to score a third goal in the 20th minute, when Martial tried to shoot in front of the goal, to rebound his attempt from defense to achieve Bruno Fernandes, who shot a powerful ground ball in the far corner of the goal.
Bamford returned to miss a new opportunity for the visiting team in the 26th minute, when his header passed over the goal, and United goalkeeper David De Gea responded to an attempt by Raphinha, who met a corner kick with a long shot in the 34th minute.
The 4th goal for United came in the 37th minute, when Martial rose to a high ball, but his attempt achieved in front of the uncontrolled Lindelof, so the Swedish international only completed the ball in the net.
Leeds managed to reduce the gap in the 41st minute, through defender Cooper’s header after a corner ball sent by Raphinha, and Meslier saved his goal with a long shot by Rashford in the last minute of the first half.
At the beginning of the second half, Fernandes placed the ball in front of Martial, who fired in the face of the goal next to the post in the 47th minute, and Leeds responded three minutes later with an attempt by Raphinha that De Gea blocked it before the ball rebounded off the post.
From a counter-attack, James passed the ball to Martial, who raised it in a distinctive cross at McTominay, but the defense sent it off in the 60th minute.
Raphinha hit a ball “on the volley”, which De Gea saved in the 65th minute, and a minute later, McTominay offered a skill break before passing to James, who got rid of his marker and put the ball into the net from between the goalkeeper’s feet.
The referee awarded a penalty kick for Manchester United after Martial was blocked, and specialist Fernandes successfully executed the kick in the 70th minute.
The Portuguese international went out of the field after the goal with Rashford, letting their places to Edinson Cavani and Donny Van de Beek.
Despite the broad result, Leeds never stopped attacking, so defender Dallas got the ball, before he fired it from outside the penalty area with a strong one, it settled in the top corner of United’s goal in the 73rd minute.
United missed 3 dangerous chances in the last ten minutes, the first through Cavani, but Meslier caught it, the second from Maguire’s header and the vall went in the goalkeeper’s position, and the third in the 86th minute when the goalkeeper confronted Fred, who preferred to shoot instead of passing for Cavani.
