Manchester City returned with a precious victory over Southampton, with a goal without response, this evening, Saturday, at Saint Mary’s Stadium, in the 14th round of the English Premier League.
Raheem Sterling scored the only goal for City in the 16th minute, to raise City to 23 points, in the 5th place, while Southampton’s balance stuck at 24 points, dropping to 4th place.
The first attempt in the match came in the 11th minute in favor of Man City, with a shot from outside the penalty area by Sterling, went away from the goal, and then a rocket by Cancello in the 13th minute, that McCarthy brilliantly tackled.
City opened the scoring in the 16th minute, with a quick counter-attack, through which the ball reached De Bruyne on the right side, and sent a cross in turn to Sterling, free of supervision, that shot it easily into the net.
Southampton appeared in the attack for the first time in the 21st minute, with a powerful shot by Theo Walcott from the right side of the penalty area, which was successfully blocked by Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson.
In the 27th minute, Walcott sent an elaborate cross to Ings inside the penalty area, who shot a header that passed next to the post, amid calls for a penalty kick due to being handicapped by Diaz during the action.
The home team continued its attempts to equalize, after defender Vestergaard hit a header from a corner kick in the 29th minute, that Ederson successfully caught.
Vestergaard returned to climb a cross from another corner kick in the 35th minute, hitting a header over the crossbar this time, and the following minutes did not witness anything new to end the first half with City advancing with a goal without response.
City began the second half strongly, with a quick counter-attack, through which Torres reached the right side of the penalty area in the 47th minute, before he hit a powerful ball that passed shortly to the post.
City missed an opportunity to score the second goal, after De Bruyne passed a wonderful ball to Bernardo in the 53rd minute, and after the Portuguese manipulated Southampton’s defense, he hit a weak ball that McCarthy caught easily.
Redmond tried to surprise Ederson with a shot in the 61st minute, but his ball went easy in the hand of the Brazilian goalkeeper, then De Bruyne appeared again in the 71st minute, with a weak low shot that McCarthy caught.
Guardiola made the first substitution in the 72nd minute by descending Mahrez, then Southampton almost scored after Tella sent a cross, Ederson went out to catch it, but Stones removed it wrongly to reach Adams, who shot a header past the post.
And the response from Gundogan came in the 78th minute, with a brilliant shot from outside the penalty area, which McCarthy sent away to a corner kick, and in the first minute of additional time, Mahrez fired a powerful ball from inside the penalty area, which went away from the goal.
Mahrez missed an opportunity to score in the 90 + 2 minute of a quick counter-attack, through which Bernardo sent a cross to the Algerian without supervision inside the penalty area, to shot strangely over the crossbar, and end the meeting with City’s victory (1-0).
